Adventure Learning Programs
Do you like to challenge yourself? Do you like to learn through doing?
Adventure Learning Programs (ALPs) provides teambuilding workshops to strengthen individual and group skills in problem-solving, communication, trust and decision-making. Whether your organization is academic, social, athletic, or service-oriented, ALPs workshops will challenge you and your group to think, plan, communicate, take risks and support one another.
Why do student groups choose to do an ALPs workshop?
- To gain individual and group awareness
- To enhance communication skills
- To improve goal setting, planning and visioning
- To strengthen decision-making skills
- To develop a greater appreciation and respect for differences within a group
- To increase team spirit
- To have fun!
ALPs facilitators work closely with each group to tailor the workshop to meet its specific goals and needs. Facilitators design workshops to give individual participants the opportunity to develop the skills and awareness required for personal and group achievement.
Two general types of workshops are available: ground and ropes. A ground workshop can last from one to five hours, while a ropes workshop requires a full day. It includes a ground workshop in the morning as well as high ropes elements in the afternoon. The high ropes course workshop provides participants with the opportunity to learn about themselves and their group on the ground and then apply what they have learned while climbing, jumping, and playing twenty-five to forty feet in the air!
In addition to certification in First Aid and CPR, all facilitators have participated in at least five days of training on a range of topics related to workshop facilitation-two days are fully devoted to ropes course facilitation. Topics include: activity sequencing, processing and debriefing, emotional and physical safety, and theory of group development. Most facilitators also have previous experience as a workshop participant or group facilitator. All ALPs facilitators are paid UW-Madison students. Two student interns serve as ALPs coordinators, and have a UW-Madison staff advisor.
ALPs is a free service for UW-Madison students and is funded by the Associated Students of Madison (ASM) through the Student Services Finance Committee.
