Funding Sources for Registered Student Organizations (RSOs)

The following are funding sources on campus that typically fund RSO events and activities. It's advisable to contact a particular funding organization to inquire if funds are still available and to obtain their eligibility criteria and application guidelines before applying.

Twice each year the Student Leadership Program offers a presentation on Campus Funding Opportunities, an overview of all funding resources. When specific dates are established, they will be announced through the weekly What's Up email sent to the primary contacts of RSOs and the dates will also be listed on the Student Organization Office (SOO) website under My Leadership Development. (These presentations are not to be confused with ASM's orientations and trainings in the name of the specific grant or fund.)

Wisconsin Experience Grant

Address: 239 Red Gym
Phone: 608/263-0366
The Wisconsin Experience Grant is no longer accepting applications for the 2008-09 academic year. Please refer any questions to the Grant Administrator.

In recognition of the vital role which registered student organizations play in enriching the campus through their events and activities, the Chancellor's Office, Offices of the Dean of Students, Provost's Office and Vice Chancellor for Administration have established the Wisconsin Experience Grant. The Wisconsin Experience Grant centralizes funds to make it easier for registered student organizations to request funding through one central source, rather than requesting funds from each individual office. The Student Organization Office (SOO), located in Room 239 Red Gym, will oversee the disbursement of any funds granted to registered student organizations through the Wisconsin Experience Grant.

The Wisconsin Experience Grant, as a co-sponsorship funding opportunity for the programs/events of registered student organization, funds educational programs/events which are open to all students and/or have the potential for campus wide impact. Registered student organizations, who receive funding, are thoughtful and intentional about contributing to student learning and the Wisconsin Experience through their programs/events. Honoraria, lodging and transportation for speakers/performers/trainers, program supplies, equipment or facility space rental, printing, advertising and food are among the items which are usually funded. Student travel expenses to conferences, first class air fare, alcohol and social events without a substantial educational component are NOT funded. For more information, including funding guidelines and a link to the application, refer to the Wisconsin Experience Grant home page.

Telephone: 608/262-3956
Email: jbrown@bascom.wisc.edu
Web: Click Here

Description: The committee provides financial assistance for bringing distinguished lecturers to campus. Units that are eligible to apply include academic departments, programs, centers and institutes, as well as officially recognized student organizations registered with the Student Organization Office when the lecture is co-sponsored by a department. Topics and speakers must be of interest to undergraduate students. Subjects of interest to upper level undergraduates and graduates will be considered. Speakers to be invited should be of national or international stature.

Restrictions: Honorarium of $0, $300, or $600; one day per diem of $100 in accordance with state travel regulations; and travel reimbursement up to $1,000. All lectures must be readily accessible to the university community (i.e., on campus, on a weekday, open to the public and free of charge). The committee expects that other sources of funding will be explored before applying to the Lectures Committee. The committee will not provide funds for speakers who lecture under contract for commercial agencies or who require large fees. During 2007-2008, the committee received a total of 95 applications. Seven of the 95 were submitted by registered student organizations in co-sponsorship with a university department, six of which received funding from the committee.

Deadlines: New applications are due on the 15th day of each month. Refer to section III.B. of the Lectures Committee's Policies and Guidelines document, accessible via the website above, for application submission deadline information.

Kemper K. Knapp Bequest Committee

Contact: Office of the Secretary of the Faculty
Address: 133 Bascom Hall
Telephone: 608/262-3956
Email: jbrown@bascom.wisc.edu
Web: Click Here

Description: The committee provides financial assistance to support special projects taking place during the next academic year (i.e., 2008-2009). Units that are eligible to apply include academic departments, programs, centers and institutes, as well as officially recognized student organizations registered with the Student Organization Office when co-sponsorship with an academic department has been obtained. Projects should have an impact on the educational and cultural life of the university community. Undergraduate students primarily, and secondarily the student body at large, are the target audience of the projects.

Restrictions: The Knapp Committee generally does not support exhibitions or lectures because other campus committees (e.g., Anonymous Fund Committee, Lectures Committee) have these activities as a central funding target. Grants are typically in the range of $500 to $5,000. During 2007-2008, the committee received a total of 22 applications. Two of the 22 were submitted by registered student organizations in co-sponsorship with a university department, three of which received funding from the committee.

Deadlines: Once each year, usually in October. Contact the Office of the Secretary of the Faculty to inquire about the specific deadline date and to obtain instructions for applying.

This week-long celebration of the end of another school year, the arrival of spring and the spirit of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is a great way for students and campus organizations to come together in the biggest party on campus of the year. In order to encourage broad participation from the campus community, WASB makes available event grants for programs and events planned, hosted and implemented during ACP. Student organizations can receive reimbursement for their event up to $300 (grant size may vary depending on the specific year, program, etc.).
