2008-2009 Student Organization Handbook

The Student Organization Handbook is a guide for student organizations in navigating their way around the campus and in understanding student organization policies & procedures. The Handbook is full of resources to get your organization rolling.

Student organizations and clubs enrich the campus in so many ways. They provide an outlet for learning outside the classroom, for meeting other people, for sharing interests, for broadening one’s horizons, for developing life, work & leadership skills, for gaining experience, and for engaging students as citizens of the campus community.

Here’s what some of our campus leaders say about leadership:

Learning outside of the classroom is one of UW-Madison's strongest values. We've found that getting involved in student organizations is a great way to become engaged in the campus community and to build the leadership skills that serve students well -- both on campus and in their future careers. At UW-Madison, education is more than labs and lectures -- it's about taking initiative, enriching your own experience, sharing your passion and improving our community. There are so many avenues available for involvement. We hope you explore them and enjoy them.

Thank you for living out the mission and vision of the Offices of the Dean of Students. Your active involvement as a student helps to enrich the campus, inspire other students, and prepare you with the knowledge and skills you'll need in life after college.

The staff in the Offices of the Dean of Students (ODOS) is here to help cultivate, advance and interconnect the academic, professional, personal, and social development of students and champion a respectful, globally engaged and diverse university community.

By participating in extracurricular activities and assuming a leadership role on campus, you are taking a big step in advancing your personal and social development as an individual.

We make our actions matter by intentionally seeking out meaningful activities, but also, through careful self-reflection, by making meaning of what we do. What you do matters to you, personally, of course, but equally importantly, it matters to the greater community. We all make an impact at UW-Madison, and we are dedicated to ensuring that each of us has as large and as positive an impact on the world around us as possible.

I encourage you to seek out and take part in the many opportunities the UW has to offer, in and out of the classroom. UW-Madison boasts so many student organizations that you are certain to find many that match your goals, interests and passions. And if by chance you don't find one, you can start it! Find your passion and get involved. Your Wisconsin Experience is what you make it, so do what you can to make the most of it.
