Student Leadership Program (SLP)

SLP offers exciting leadership training for UW-Madison students! The programs are designed to develop leadership skills in emerging leaders, as well as enhance the skills of those currently in leadership positions. Three student coordinators lead SLP with assistance from SLP committee chairs, general members, and the Student Organization Office (SOO). As a member, you will be a vital part of the planning and implementation of the SLP events, as well as the development of new ideas for the future of leadership at UW-Madison. SLP meetings are held twice a month and a filled with fun, friends, and leadership challenges!

SLP believes that the leadership process begins by strengthening individual leadership skills, and offers opportunities for individuals to develop the fundamental skills that are helpful in maintaining successful personal relationships, contributing to campus organizations, and participating as citizens of our campus community. The development of leadership is a life-long process that starts with the potential found within you. Leadership training can provide the catalyst for recognizing and pursuing that potential.

There is truly something for everyone in SLP. Listed below are the various committees sponsored by the organization. As SLP general members, students are asked to contribute their time to at least one committee of their own interest.

Big 10 Leadership Network

This committee has charted new territory in the past year. Ultimately the Big 10 Leadership Network strives to improve student leadership through the use of goal setting and leadership speakers. To accomplish these goals, the Big 10 Leadership Network brings in a series of nationally known speakers to discuss different aspects of leadership. Following the speaker, GRAF teams, or Goal Reflection and Feedback Sessions are organized where students discuss their individual goals and assist other members through networking and peer mentoring.

Organizational Management Services*

The purpose of this committee is to assist all student groups with the management of their organization. They aim to meet the needs of the 700+ student organizations on campus through a variety of specifically tailored programs and services. This committee focuses on bringing leaders of student organizations together in a variety of different forums to discuss leadership issues directly affecting their organization. This committee is refocusing its efforts this year to better serve student organizations. It plans to create a leadership blog, where students can discuss different topics pertaining to leadership, drop in peer advising, for face-to-face appointments, as well as plan the leadership awards banquet each semester.

Confidence In Communication Training Series*

The purpose of this committee is to plan and implement curriculum for a communication workshop. This training program is open to any UW Student, but targets key areas of communication in which students struggle. The curriculum provides opportunities for students to learn the skills and more importantly practice the skills in a safe environment with open/constructive feedback. Skills that have been of focus in the past include; facilitating training programs, running effective meetings, interviewing, and power words.

All-Campus Leadership Conference

Every February the Student Leadership Program sponsors the All-Campus Leadership Conference with about 650 students attending last year. The conference is marketed to students and especially student organization leaders. The conference includes: a professional keynote speaker whose focus is on a specific area of leadership development, lunch, and then several breakout session workshops. Students can choose the breakout session they want to attend based on their personal leadership interests. The conference is free to UW-Madison students.

Leadership & Social Justice Committee*

The purpose of this committee is to bring attention and awareness to the relationship between leadership and social justice. The committee discusses and designs events to bring together students and community leaders who are interested in these issues. Past programs included a Social Justice Movie Series, Diversity Training, Poetry Reading, and various collaborative events with other social justice organizations. This committee strives to bring student groups together to plan and support programs on campus that actively promotes and educates other students on issues related to social justice.

Student Consultant & Speakers Bureau*

Trained facilitators create and facilitate interactive workshops for students requesting training in many areas of leadership development. These workshops are free and tailored specifically to meet the needs of the student organization. Past workshops have included such topics as time management, strategic planning, and leadership styles.

Emerging Leaders Program / Queer Emerging Leaders Program*

The ELP/QELP programs are a series of interactive workshops for freshmen and sophomores that focus on basic leadership skill development. The workshops are hands-on and provide students with an out-of-classroom learning experience which builds young students' skills and capacities to lead others. These 8 week programs are offered each semester. QELP is identical to ELP but with an emphasis on issues pertaining to the LGBTA community.

Leadership Through Volunteering Committee*

The purpose of this committee is to develop and gain leadership skills through voluntary service. This committee helps student volunteers identify and recognize the leadership skills they are developing while participating in service work within the community. The committee also reaches out to other service organizations with similar missions to collaborate and offer facilitation and reflection components to their service projects.

Leadership Resources and Campus Relations*

This committee serves as both an internal resource for other SLP committees as well as an external link between SLP and the media. They function as the creative leadership resource branch that implements marketing strategies, provides liaisons to the campus community, and promotes SLP events and programs. This committee reaches out to student leaders through electronic resources such as an email listserv “What the Leaders Read” and other on-line and hard copy resources.

The "*" character indicates these committees are available to facilitate and coordinate a tailor made workshop at the request of any UW-Madison student or student group.
